“Insulating Facades More Thinly”: An Interview with the Experts in DETAIL

In the current issue of DETAIL, Bettina Gerharz-Kalte and Tobias Wild-Blatt from Evonik’s Thermal Insulation team speak with Jan Wurm from the Arup international planning and consulting firm about the benefits of high-performance insulating materials.

Over the course of a four-page interview, they use CALOSTAT® as an example illustrating both the technical and financial advantages.
Competition on the insulation market is fierce. But CALOSTAT® stands out among its peers, primarily on the strength of three properties: “It’s the combination of insulating performance, non-combustibility and sustainability,” says Gerharz-Kalte, describing the benefits of CALOSTAT®.
A recent Arup economic feasibility study corroborated the benefits of Evonik’s high-performance insulation. The study used a digital model of a planned office building in central London to look at the effects of CALOSTAT® on energy balance, interior comfort, and cost-effectiveness. In this specific example, the investor was able to increase return on sales by up to €3.7 million.
The space saved due to thinner exterior wall designs is relevant to investors. “Interest among developers has grown, especially in metropolitan areas like London, where the concentration of premium real estate is quite high,” says Wurm. Architect Wild-Blatt confirms this: “Demand from England is high right now, especially among builders who want to use a non-combustible insulation to avoid disasters like the Grenfell Tower fire.”
